Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz about The Game Awards was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
